BEESTON CASTLE

This is an English Heritage castle and is a ruined stronghold which dates back to around 1220. It was built by the Earl Ranuf of Chester and is set on a steep hill and gives spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Open: Saturday:- 11.15am - 4.30pm Sunday:- 1pm - 4.30pm February 12th - 18th open all week for 1/2 term. February 19th to 1st April open 5 days a week (closed Thursday/Friday) From 2nd April open all week.

This Norman Castle has guarded the town of Clitheroe for over 800 years. The castle museum provides information about history of the Ribble Valley including the Pendle Witches. It features the sights and sounds of a recreated clogger shop, lead mine and cottage kitchen.

LANCASTER CASTLE

Open: Guided tours daily from 10.30am to 4pm Tour duration 45-60 minutes. Visitors are advised to check opening times.

This imposing fortress was the setting for the imprisonment and trial of the Pendle Witches. Guided tours are available of the vaulted Shire Hall, The Drop Room, Hadrians Tower, Dungeons, The Grand Jury Toom and Courts. The Castle is still used as a prison and a court that may necessitate changes to their openings (telephone for up to date information). A free guide for an external tour of the castle is available from Lancaster Tourist Information Centre.

SKIPTON CASTLE

Open: Open daily from 10am (Sunday 12 noon), except for 25 December. Last admission is at 6pm (October - February 4pm).

Admission: Adults: £5.60 Children (5-17): £3.00 Children under 5: free Over 60s and students: £5.00 Family Ticket for two adults and up to 3 children over 5: £16.90 (saves up to £3.60).

Skipton is one of the best-preserved and most complete mediaeval castles in England, despite enduring a three year siege in the Civil War, and is over 900 years old.
